In the aftermath of the 2005 civil unrest in France, Le Monde, Libération and The BBC sought to unravel the causative elements that fuelled the fires set on France by dialoguing with socially engaged rappers. Looking at such contemporary artists as a new register of community leaders, this exhibit proposes that professionals consider the discourses of rap narrative as a new source of data. Complimentary to traditional urban analysis, this could allow practitioners to amplify voices that are seldom heard in public hearings and participatory exercises, whilst placing city users back at the centre of urban development processes.
