Reimagining the St. Lawrence Shoreline: Le Rivage de l'Écoumène
2024. Urban Design Competition, with Groupe BC2
Le Rivage de l'Écoumène is an urban design project that was recently recognized with a special mention at the National Capital Commission's Ideas Competition for the Redevelopment of the St. Lawrence Shoreline. This accolade underscores our project's deep commitment to ecological sustainability and enhancing collective well-being through innovative urban design.
PROJECT VISION
Le Rivage de l'Écoumène draws inspiration from the notion of 'écoumène'—a term that embodies humanity's imprint on Earth. It reflects the dynamics between humans and nature, rooted in indigenous wisdom that views humans not as the epicenter of existence but as one of many interwoven elements of life on Earth.
DESIGN FEATURES
The Frequented Shoreline
Addressing years of natural territory sacrificed for automotive mobility, our design proposes the gradual transformation of a segment of the Dufferin-Montmorency highway into a vibrant riverside esplanade. This space aims to reconnect the river with the city while fostering the regeneration of local ecosystems. It promises new areas for living, relaxation, and contemplation along the water's edge.
The Urban Boulevard
In tandem with these changes, Sainte-Anne's axis is set to evolve into an urban boulevard, now linked to the highway. This transformation supports sustainable mobility by incorporating electrified public transport and infrastructure for active transportation. It aims to strengthen connections between the Port of Québec and Montmorency Falls, activating exchange hubs in the downtown and the historic center of Beauport.
The Garden Pathway
The garden pathway serves as a guide along the shore, interspersed with stations that feature gardens, public art, and architectural pavilions. These stations are part of a cultural program that reflects contemporary themes and are linked to a biennial cultural event, allowing for an evolving dialogue in public spaces.
A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT
At the heart of these attractions is an emblematic building designed as a meeting place. Its form is shaped by the architectural principles of indigenous peoples, emphasizing choices based on climate, vernacular technologies, economy, social organization, spirituality, and history. Envisioned as an organic structure that extends and rises to a new summit, this building is the culmination of collaborative efforts to weave diverse narratives into its fabric.
CONCLUSION
Le Rivage de l'Écoumène stands as a testament to our hopes for the future, reflecting our era and those before us in the Eastern Littoral of Québec. It is a design that dances with time, showcasing our aspirations for a symbiotic relationship between urban environments and the natural world.
We are proud to contribute to the dialogue on sustainable urban renewal and grateful for the recognition received, affirming our commitment to ecological stewardship and community enrichment.
